  • Represented Scotland in every International competition for 11 years, from 1963 to 1974.
  • Most capped Scottish International ever.
  • Represented Great Britain in numerous International competitions for a period of 10 years between 1963 and 1973.
  • Currently English, British, European record holder and former World Champion in 50m, lOOm and 200m Butterfly.

I believe that great coaching is primarily dependent on personal attributes, and secondarily a question of knowledge. The latter can be gained with instruction, hard work and an open mind, the former, however, cannot. I hope that my ability as a coach is evident from my achievements in the field of swimming: During my 25 years of coaching experience, I have been selected as England and GB Coach from 1983 to 1997, manager to the GB team in 1995, South West Counties and Gloucester Coach in 1990 and was selected to coach the youth swimming weekend “Swim 2000”. I have been awarded the Alan Hine Award by the British Coaches and Teachers Association and have produced 24 English/Scottish/British senior internationals, 26 ASA National champions and 26 Junior Internationals. Whilst some of these were from elite squads, many were not, and I have prided myself on my ability to pick out talent and support those from local clubs to fulfill their international potential, whilst nurturing those with less natural ability with equal care. I would like to think that I have been available for each individual swimmer both throughout their training and at every competition.

ASA Level 3 Teacher and Coach

I started in my teens with swimming and water polo for Salisbury at the open air pool. I then went on to other sports, 1) becoming British Champion, Instructor and Refereeing up to British Championships in one and 2) competing in national league and championships and instruction of beginners in another.  Returned to swimming, when my sons learned to swim with the club over 10 years ago and I have acquired the ASA qualifications and now spend over 20 hours per week teaching and coaching from stage 1 to Adult coaching, Flip and Fun, Rookie Lifeguard (with my NPLQ) and Aquafit.
